Vega Sicilia's Reserva Especial is a spectacular tribute to Spanish winemaking tradition, reviving the historical practice of blending different vintages of 'Unico' to create a wine of ultimate consistency, complexity, and balance. The 2015 Release is a masterfully curated blend of three exceptional vintages: 1994, 1996, and 2000. Crafted primarily from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, this legendary cuvee represents the pinnacle of Ribera del Duero's high-altitude clay-limestone terroir. The wine undergoes an incredibly rigorous aging regime in both French and American oak barrels before resting in the bottle. This painstaking process yields a profound, multi-dimensional red wine characterized by notes of dried dark fruits, tobacco, cedar, exotic spices, and seamless, velvety tannins.
🍾 About the Producer
Bodegas Vega Sicilia stands as Spain's undisputed viticultural grand cru, established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves and owned by the Álvarez family since 1982. Anchored along the banks of the Duero River in Valbuena de Duero, the estate spans roughly 1,000 hectares, with 210 hectares of vineyard plots situated at elevations of 700 to 800 meters. The terroir is defined by a complex mosaic of chalky limestone, alluvial gravel, and clay soils exposed to extreme diurnal temperature swings. Guided by viticultural director Enrique Macías and technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, farming is conducted organically and sustainably, with strict dry farming and plot-by-plot harvesting. Winemaking is legendary for its patience: wines are aged for years across bespoke French and American oak coopered in-house, followed by extensive bottle cellarage. Benchmark expressions include the multi-vintage masterwork Reserva Especial, the venerable and long-lived flagship Único, and the vibrant five-year-aged Valbuena 5°.
