Maison Verget's 'Lieu Secret' is a brilliant expression of Jean-Marie Guffens' legendary, iconoclastic approach to winemaking in Burgundy. Frustrated by the rigid bureaucracy of the appellation system, Guffens created this cuvée—often classified as a Vin de France—to showcase outstanding Chardonnay from secret, highly prized vineyard sites that he keeps closely guarded. By liberating himself from AOC constraints, he focuses purely on terroir and fruit quality. The wine is vinified with meticulous care, utilizing gentle pneumatic pressing and aging on its fine lees in concrete or stainless steel to preserve its pure, mineral-driven character. It offers a beautiful tension, vibrant citrus notes, and a textured palate that punches far above its humble classification.

Founded in 1990 by the visionary winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine, Maison Verget is a highly acclaimed negociant-eleveur based in Sologny within the Maconnais region of Burgundy, France. Renowned for revolutionizing white Burgundy production, the house focuses on highlighting the distinct micro-terroirs of the region, from Macon and Chablis to the Cote d'Or, alongside select ventures in the Vaucluse. By employing precise pressing techniques, custom oak and concrete aging regimens, and minimal intervention, Verget crafts expressive, mineral-driven Chardonnay and elegant Pinot Noir. Their signature expressions, such as the Grand Elevage and various single-vineyard bottlings, are celebrated globally for their tension, purity, and exceptional value.
