Maison Verget's 'Terroirs' series represents Jean-Marie Guffens' masterclass in demonstrating how diverse soil compositions shape Chardonnay. Sourced from carefully selected plots across the limestone-rich clay soils of the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, these wines are crafted to express the pure, unadorned voice of their respective micro-climates. Jean-Marie Guffens, an iconoclast who arrived in Burgundy from Flanders in the 1970s, revolutionized the region by proving that the Mâconnais could produce white wines of tension, energy, and complexity rivaling the Côte d'Or. The winemaking for the Terroirs range involves gentle pneumatic pressing of whole bunches, fermentation using indigenous yeasts, and aging primarily in horizontal stainless steel tanks or concrete vats with a small proportion of older oak to preserve the vibrant fruit and mineral core. This approach yields a classic white Burgundy characterized by bright citrus, green apple, white flowers, and a distinct chalky minerality.
