Hailing from Gisborne, affectionately dubbed the Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand, the Villa Maria Barrique Fermented Reserve Chardonnay is a classic expression of one of the country's historic wine regions. Gisborne, situated on the easternmost tip of the North Island, is among the first places in the world to greet the morning sun. This sun-drenched maritime climate, combined with heavy, moisture-retaining clay soils, yields Chardonnay grapes of exceptional ripeness and tropical intensity. To craft this Reserve bottling, Villa Maria utilizes traditional Burgundian techniques: 100% Chardonnay grapes are fully fermented in French oak barriques and subjected to regular yeast lees stirring (bâtonnage). This meticulous process imparts a luxurious, creamy texture, balancing the vibrant natural acidity with rich notes of toasted brioche, roasted nuts, and ripe stone fruits. Villa Maria, founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich, has long championed this region, proving that New Zealand Chardonnay can stand proudly on the world stage with its unique blend of New World fruit purity and Old World structural elegance.
