The 2023 growing season in the Pfalz presented a turbulent weather pattern with an exceptionally wet spring, followed by a hot, dry mid-summer and late harvest rains. Thanks to rigorous canopy management and early selective harvesting in Wageck's limestone plots, the 2023 Groß Riesling preserved a sharp, vibrant acidity alongside expressive notes of green apple and white peach. The cool limestone subsoils buffered the summer heat, yielding a bright, structurally tense wine with a distinct saline minerality and a lower potential alcohol profile compared to warmer years. Currently entering its initial drinking window in 2026, it shows great purity and will continue to evolve gracefully through 2035.

Situated in the northern Mittelhaardt village of Bissersheim in the Pfalz, Weingut Wageck (historically Wageck-Pfaffmann) represents a multigenerational viticultural heritage formally established in its contemporary incarnation in 1973. Managed by brothers Thomas and Frank Pfaffmann alongside their parents Gertraud and Gunter, the 58-hectare estate has garnered acclaim for its distinctive Burgundy-centric focus and site-expressive mineral profiles. The domaine's terroir is profoundly defined by tertiary limestone formations (Kalkmergel and Kalkstein) with notable south-to-southeast vineyard exposures, prominently featured in premier parcels such as Bissersheimer Goldberg and Großkarlbacher Burgweg. Guided by sustainable vineyard management and low-yield French clonal selections, the cellar regimen centers on gentle ambient-yeast spontaneous fermentations and careful elevage across stainless steel and French barriques. Benchmark bottlings include the mineral-etched Bissersheimer Goldberg Riesling, crystalline Chardonnays, and complex single-vineyard Spätburgunder cuvées.
