✨ wine.spec_sheet

Crafted only in exceptional years when nature permits, the Rüdesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Eiswein represents the pinnacle of extreme, high-risk winemaking. The Klosterlay vineyard, situated on the lower slopes of Rüdesheim with soils rich in quartzite and slate, benefits from the moderating influence of the Rhine River, yet requires freezing temperatures of at least minus seven degrees Celsius to freeze the grapes on the vine. Harvested by hand in the freezing pre-dawn hours, the grapes are pressed while still frozen to separate the highly concentrated, sugary nectar from the water ice. This traditional, labor-intensive method yields a luscious dessert wine with vibrant acidity, balancing intense sweetness with remarkable freshness. The history of Eiswein in Germany is steeped in folklore, born from accidental frost harvests in the late eighteenth century, and Weingut Leitz continues this legacy with meticulous craftsmanship, capturing the pure, crystalline essence of the Rheingau terroir.

Weingut Leitz, located in the historic town of Rüdesheim am Rhein in Germany's Rheingau region, traces its winemaking heritage back to 1744. Under the visionary leadership of Johannes Leitz, who took over the family estate in 1985, the winery has earned international acclaim for its exceptional, terroir-driven Rieslings. The estate meticulously manages some of the Rheingau's most prestigious steep-slope grand cru vineyards, including Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland, and Berg Roseneck. Renowned for their remarkable purity, vibrant acidity, and deep minerality, Leitz's wines range from bone-dry expressions to luscious, noble sweet Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, alongside a pioneering range of premium non-alcoholic wines.
