Single Malt Mizunara Oak

af Yamazaki (Suntory)
Other Spirit wine.year 📍 NA, Japan

⏳ wine.drinking_window

As a premium distilled single malt, this spirit is fully matured upon bottling and does not develop further in the bottle. Unopened, it can be preserved indefinitely when stored upright in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it is best enjoyed within 1 to 2 years to preserve its delicate and volatile aromatics.

✨ wine.spec_sheet

Crafted at Japan's oldest commercial distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii near Kyoto, the Yamazaki Single Malt Mizunara Oak represents the pinnacle of Japanese spirits craftsmanship. The defining characteristic of this malt is its maturation in rare Japanese Mizunara oak (Quercus crispula). Historically utilized out of necessity during World War II when importing European and American casks was impossible, Mizunara has since become a legendary and highly coveted signature of Japanese whisky. These trees must grow for at least 200 years before they can be coopered, and the wood is notoriously porous and difficult to work with. The reward for this painstaking process is a spirit of unparalleled complexity, yielding signature aromatic notes of temple incense, sandalwood, coconut, and dry oriental spices, all softened by Yamazaki's famously pure local spring water.

Established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, Yamazaki is Japan's oldest commercial whisky distillery, located at the scenic convergence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers in Osaka Prefecture, where a unique humid microclimate and exceptionally pure water create the ideal environment for spirits maturation. Owned by Suntory, the distillery is globally celebrated for its pioneering craftsmanship and innovative maturation process, which utilizes a diverse array of cask types including Spanish sherry casks, American white oak, and rare Japanese Mizunara oak. Yamazaki's signature style is characterized by a complex, multi-layered fruitiness and deep, spicy incense-like aromas, epitomized by legendary expressions such as their Single Malt 12 and 18 Years Old.
