🍷 Vintage Profile

The 2018 growing season in Chianti Classico began with a wet spring that replenished deep water reserves, followed by a warm, balanced summer devoid of extreme heat spikes. Marked diurnal temperature swings throughout late August and September facilitated prolonged phenolic maturation without sacrificing natural acidity. Harvest proceeded under favorable dry conditions, allowing the Cabernet varieties and Sangiovese to achieve fine-grained, integrated tannins and exceptional aromatic clarity. Acclaimed for its freshness and structural elegance compared to warmer antecedent years, the 2018 is entering its prime drinking window in 2026 and possesses cellar longevity through 2045.

✨ Technical Specifications

Solaia is sourced from a single 20-hectare vineyard situated on the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, characterized by limestone and clay soils at an altitude of approximately 350 to 400 meters. The 2018 vintage consists of a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 7% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 growing season in Tuscany was defined by a cool spring with abundant rainfall, followed by a warm, consistent summer that allowed for gradual ripening and balanced acidity. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques and was aged for approximately 18 months in new French oak before bottling and further refinement.

🍾 About the Producer

Marchesi Antinori is one of the world's most storied winemaking dynasties, tracing its commercial viticultural heritage to 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori matriculated into Florence's Arte dei Vinattieri. Spanning twenty-six generations, the family revolutionized modern Italian viticulture under Marchese Piero Antinori and legendary enologist Giacomo Tachis, catalyzing the Super Tuscan revolution with the pioneering release of Tignanello in 1971. Antinori commands an unrivaled tapestry of microclimates across Central Italy, encompassing the galestro and albarese marls of Chianti Classico at Tenuta Tignanello and Badia a Passignano, the maritime gravels of Bolgheri at Guado al Tasso, and the fossiliferous clay-limestone soils of Umbria at Castello della Sala. In the cellar, CEO and chief enologist Renzo Cotarella orchestrates a balance of precision, clonal selection, and judicious French oak barrique maturation. Antinori's benchmark wines—including the Sangiovese-driven Tignanello, the Cabernet-dominated Solaia, and the benchmark Umbrian Chardonnay blend Cervaro della Sala—stand as definitive monuments of Italian winemaking refinement.
