Hailing from the rolling hills of Monferrato in Piedmont, Banfi's 'La Lus' is a striking tribute to Albarossa, a rare and fascinating grape variety. Created in 1938 by the agronomist Professor Giovanni Dalmasso, Albarossa is a genetic crossing of Barbera and Chatus (which was long mistaken for Nebbiolo). The wine's name, 'La Lus,' translates to 'The Light' in the local Piedmontese dialect, a nod to the brilliant, luminous ruby color of the wine and the bright future Banfi envisioned for this nearly forgotten grape. Cultivated in the clay-limestone soils of the Strevi estate, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel before aging for approximately 12 months in French oak tonneaux. This process tames the grape's robust tannins and vibrant acidity, resulting in a deeply colored, full-bodied red rich with aromas of dark plum, wild berries, licorice, and warm spices. It represents a masterful bridge between Piedmontese tradition and modern viticultural curiosity.
