Hailing from the historic estate of Castello Banfi in the southern hills of Montalcino, the Poggio alle Mura Riserva is a monumental expression of 100% Sangiovese. The wine is named after the majestic 13th-century medieval fortress, Castello di Poggio alle Mura, which stands as a sentinel over the vineyards. This bottling represents the pinnacle of Banfi's pioneering clonal research into Sangiovese, begun in the 1980s to identify the finest biotypes for the estate's unique mosaic of soils. Grown in a single vineyard surrounding the castle, where sandy clay soils are rich in limestone and marine fossils, the grapes benefit from a warm microclimate tempered by sea breezes. The wine undergoes meticulous fermentation in hybrid wood-and-stainless-steel tanks, followed by aging for approximately 30 months in French oak barriques and casks, and further refinement in the bottle. The result is a profound, structured red that seamlessly blends historical heritage with modern viticultural excellence.
