The Evangelho Vineyard Heritage is a liquid monument to California's viticultural history. Located in Antioch, Contra Costa County, this legendary vineyard was planted in the 1890s on its own roots, thriving in deep, wind-blown Delhi sand dunes that reach up to forty feet deep. Because phylloxera cannot survive in these sandy soils, these ancient, centenarian vines have survived on their original rootstocks. The field blend is dominated by Zinfandel, Carignan, and Mourvèdre, alongside trace amounts of Palomino, Alicante Bouschet, and Mission. Bedrock Wine Co. co-ferments these varieties using native yeasts and minimal intervention, capturing the unique interplay of the intense Delta sun and cooling breezes from the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. The resulting wine is remarkably bright, savory, and elegant, defying the typical heavy expectations of warm-climate Zinfandel with its striking acidity, fine-grained tannins, and deep, dark-fruit complexity.
