While Bombay Sapphire is a world-renowned London Dry Gin rather than a traditional wine, its production is steeped in artisanal craftsmanship. Launched in 1987, it revitalized the gin category with its distinctive translucent blue bottle, named in honor of the Star of Bombay sapphire. Distilled at the historic Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, England, this spirit utilizes a unique vapor-infusion process. Instead of boiling the botanicals directly in the spirit, the grain alcohol vapor passes through copper baskets containing ten hand-selected botanicals—including juniper berries, grains of paradise, coriander, cubeb berries, and almond. This delicate method coaxes out bright, floral, and citrusy aromatic oils, resulting in a remarkably smooth, balanced, and complex London Dry style.
🍾 About the Producer
Introduced in 1986 by International Distillers & Vintners and acquired by Bacardi in 1997, Bombay Sapphire revolutionized modern gin distillation. Production is based at the historically preserved Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, a former banknote paper mill straddling the River Test. Unlike conventional London Dry gins produced by boiling botanicals directly in neutral spirit, Bombay Sapphire employs specialized Carterhead copper stills that utilize gentle vapour infusion. Vapours rise through perforated copper baskets loaded with ten sustainably sourced botanicals: Tuscan juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, liquorice, orris root, Spanish almonds, lemon peel, cassia bark, cubeb berries, and West African grains of paradise. Supervised by Master Distiller Dr. Anne Brock, the distillation yields an exceptionally delicate, aromatic, and bright profile. The house style is defined by its pristine floral lift, vibrant citrus peel accents, and warming peppery finish, benchmarked by the flagship Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin.
