Hailing from the alpine forests of Isère, France, Chartreuse's Walnut Liqueur (traditionally known as Noix des Pères Chartreux) is a masterful expression of a historic regional digestif. Crafted by the Carthusian Monks, this liqueur relies on green walnuts harvested at a precise moment of maturity—traditionally around St. John's Day (June 24th) when the shells are still soft. These green walnuts are crushed and macerated in a neutral spirit, then combined with a secret blend of botanicals and aged in oak casks. This process coaxes out a rich, mahogany-hued elixir that balances the natural bitterness of walnut skins with warm spices, honeyed sweetness, and a complex herbal backbone, embodying centuries of monastic distilling expertise.

Tracing its origins to 1605 when the Carthusian monks received a mysterious manuscript detailing an 'Elixir of Long Life,' Chartreuse is one of the world's most iconic and secretive spirit producers. Perfected in 1737 at the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble, France, the sacred recipe remains strictly guarded by just two monks who oversee the selection, maceration, and distillation of 130 natural mountain herbs, plants, and flowers. Production has traversed historic milestones, including a famed period of distillation in Tarragona, Spain, before settling at their modern state-of-the-art distillery in Entre-Deux-Guiers.
