Compass Box’s The Peat Monster is a landmark expression in the world of modern Scotch whisky, born from the rebellious and transparent blending philosophy of founder John Glaser. The whisky's name has its own legendary origin: during a tasting of an early, heavily peated prototype, a New York spirits specialist exclaimed that the dram was an absolute peat monster. Embracing the moniker, Compass Box launched the expression in 2003. Unlike traditional single malts, this Blended Malt is an artful marriage of heavily peated single malts—primarily sourced from the iconic Islay distilleries of Caol Ila and Laphroaig—balanced with lightly peated Highland malts. The result is a multi-dimensional spirit where intense peat smoke, bonfire ash, and medicinal iodine notes are beautifully integrated with creamy vanilla, orchard fruits, and a coastal, salty tang, proving that peat can be both powerful and elegantly balanced.
