Craigellachie stands as a defiant, old-school monument in the heart of Speyside, Scotland. Established in 1891 by the legendary Alexander Edward and Peter 'Restless Peter' Mackie, the distillery is famous for its stubborn refusal to modernize its core character. While most distilleries transitioned to modern condensers, Craigellachie retained its traditional copper worm tubs—coiled pipes cooled in cold water tanks—which restrict copper contact and leave a heavy, sulfurous, and muscular spirit. This 17-year-old single malt expression showcases this signature 'meaty' character, tempered by nearly two decades of maturation in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The result is a complex dram that balances robust, waxy, and slightly smoky notes with rich tropical fruits, vanilla, and toasted almonds, representing a style of whisky-making that has largely vanished elsewhere in the region.
