Craigellachie is often whispered about among whisky connoisseurs as the defiant, old-school rebel of Speyside. Founded in 1891 during the late-Victorian whisky boom by the legendary Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward, the distillery has stubbornly clung to traditional methods that others abandoned. Most famous is their continued use of copper worm tubs—coiled pipes cooled in cold water tanks—to condense their spirit. This rapid cooling limits copper contact, leaving a heavy, meaty, and delightfully sulfurous character in the new-make spirit. When matured in a refill bourbon barrel, like this 'Full Cask' No 158, the wood plays a supporting role. Rather than masking the spirit under heavy oak or sherry influence, the refill cask coaxes out Craigellachie's signature tropical fruit notes—think grilled pineapples and baked apples—intertwined with a robust, savory, and slightly smoky complexity. It is a dramatic showcase of distillery character, representing a style of whisky-making that feels beautifully frozen in time.

Craigellachie Distillery blev grundlagt i 1891 af whiskypionererne Peter Mackie og Alexander Edward og troner markant på et klippefremspring med udsigt over sammenløbet af floderne Spey og Fiddich. Destilleriet er tegnet af den berømte victorianske arkitekt Charles Doig og fravælger bevidst moderne destillationstendenser til fordel for en kompromisløs, fyldig og traditionel spiritusstil. Destilleriet henter sit bløde procesvand fra det nærliggende Blue Hill og benytter oliefyret bygmalt, traditionelle gæringskar af træ (washbacks) og karakteristiske udendørs worm tub-kølespiraler af kobber. Ved bevidst at begrænse kontakten mellem damp og kobber under kondenseringen indfanger Craigellachie robuste, tunge og svovlholdige aromakomponenter. Disse udvikler sig til en enestående muskuløs single malt med umamiprægede, kødfulde noter, der smukt afbalanceres af moden, tropisk ananas. Under ejerskab af Bacardi (John Dewar & Sons) og med den prisbelønnede Malt Master Stephanie Macleod i spidsen forener destilleriet sin historiske rolle i eksklusive blends med skelsættende single malts med aldersangivelse – heriblandt den klassiske 13- og 17-års samt sjældne fadlagrede vintage-aftapninger – alle tappet uden koldfiltrering ved naturlig styrke.
