Craigellachie is famously known as the 'bad boy of Speyside' due to its stubborn adherence to old-school whisky-making techniques. Founded in 1891 by the legendary 'Restless Peter' Mackie and Alexander Edward, the distillery is one of the very few remaining that utilizes traditional worm tubs—coils of copper pipe submerged in cold water tanks—to condense its spirit. This process limits copper contact, leaving heavy, sulfurous, and meaty compounds in the distillate that would otherwise be stripped away. When matured in a refill barrel, such as Cask No 800575, the wood's influence is beautifully restrained. Rather than being dominated by active virgin oak or heavy sherry, the spirit's natural character shines through, revealing a complex tapestry of waxy citrus, striking minerality, campfire smoke, and a robust, savory undertone that has captivated connoisseurs for generations.
