Craigellachie is celebrated among whisky connoisseurs as the defiant, muscular rebel of Speyside. Founded in 1891 during the late-Victorian whisky boom, the distillery occupies a dramatic cliffside overlooking the intersection of the rivers Fiddich and Spey. What truly sets Craigellachie apart is its stubborn refusal to modernize its core character. While most distilleries transitioned to modern shell-and-tube condensers, Craigellachie famously retains its traditional copper worm tubs—coiled pipes submerged in cold water. This rapid cooling limits copper contact, leaving a heavy, sulfurous, and meaty spirit. When matured in a refill barrel like Cask No 800591, the wood plays a beautifully subtle supporting role. Rather than masking the spirit with dominant oak or sherry notes, the refill barrel allows the raw, oily, tropical fruit, and flinty gunpowder character of the Craigellachie distillate to take center stage, offering a pure, unadulterated look at one of Scotland's most idiosyncratic single malts.
