The J.R.O. Afflatus Shiraz is a profound tribute to Joseph Rowe Osborn, who founded d'Arenberg in 1912. The term 'Afflatus' refers to a sudden rush of divine creative inspiration, a fitting moniker for a wine born from the ancient, weathered soils of McLaren Vale. Sourced from a select single vineyard, this exceptional Shiraz is crafted using d'Arenberg's time-honored, hands-on methods. The grapes undergo traditional foot-treading in gently waxed concrete open fermenters before being pressed in historic basket presses. It is then matured in a combination of new and older French and American oak barriques. The result is a monumental, deeply concentrated red wine that captures the soul of McLaren Vale, boasting intense dark fruit characters, complex earthy undertones, and a powerful yet velvety tannic structure.
πΎ About the Producer
Founded in 1912 by Joseph Osborn, d'Arenberg has grown into one of McLaren Vale's most iconic and storied family-owned estates in South Australia. Under the visionary stewardship of fourth-generation winemaker Chester Osborn, the winery adheres strictly to traditional, sustainable methods, utilizing certified organic and biodynamic viticulture along with foot-treading and basket pressing. Renowned for its eclectic naming conventions and distinctive red-stripe label, the estate crafts a wide spectrum of expressive wines with a particular mastery of RhΓ΄ne varieties, old-vine Grenache, and robust Shiraz. Signature bottlings such as 'The Dead Arm Shiraz' and 'The Ironstone Pressings' stand as benchmarks of regional depth, complexity, and age-worthy character.
