Domaine Ponsot's Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru 'Clos des Alouettes' is a celebrated monopole that captures the soul of this historic estate. The vineyard's name, translating to 'Enclosure of the Larks,' evokes the high-altitude, sun-drenched slopes where these birds gather above the village. Perched on thin, stony limestone soils, this terroir imparts a striking mineral tension and ethereal elegance to the wine. True to the Ponsot philosophy, the winemaking is fiercely traditional: fermentations rely on native yeasts in ancient wooden vats, and the wine is aged entirely in seasoned oak barrels with no new wood, preserving the pristine, unadorned expression of Pinot Noir. Established in 1872 by William Ponsot upon his return from the Franco-Prussian War, Domaine Ponsot stands as one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s most storied and fiercely individualistic estates. Under Hippolyte Ponsot, the domaine emerged as an early pioneer of estate bottling in the 1930s and played an instrumental role in codifying Burgundy's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée system. Following Laurent Ponsot’s departure in 2017, the estate continues under the stewardship of Rose-Marie Ponsot and winemaker Alexandre Abel. Viticulture adheres to rigorous biological and non-interventionist principles across its historic terroirs, defined by Bathonian and Bajocian limestones blanketed in fossil-rich marl. In the cellar, tradition converges with uncompromising technique: low-sulfite regimes, fermentation in open-top wooden vats, and maturation in neutral oak barrels without new wood. Domaine Ponsot is celebrated for its monumental benchmark expressions, most prominently the profound Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes and the unique, ancient-vine Aligoté monopole Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Clos des Monts Luisants.
