Domaine Ponsot's Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 'Cuvée des Merles' is a legendary expression of Pinot Noir, named in accordance with the domaine's poetic tradition of naming specific cuvées after local birds—in this case, the 'merles' or blackbirds that frequent the vineyards. Sourced from the prestigious Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Nuits, the vines sit on well-drained limestone and clay soils, yielding a wine of immense perfume, silkiness, and depth. Ponsot's winemaking philosophy is famously non-interventionist and traditional: the grapes are fermented in ancient open-top wooden vats, and the wine is aged entirely in old, seasoned oak barrels (some several decades old) to prevent any new oak flavors from masking the pure expression of the terroir. Unfiltered and crafted with minimal sulfur, this cuvée represents the pinnacle of classical, terroir-driven Burgundy.

Domaine Ponsot blev grundlagt i 1872 af William Ponsot og er en legendarisk ejendom med base i Morey-Saint-Denis i hjertet af Côte de Nuits i Bourgogne. Domænet er kendt for sin uafhængighed og pionerånd; det var således blandt de allerførste i regionen, der tappede vinene på eget domæne i 1930'erne og gik forrest inden for klonselektion.
