Crafted by the visionary Ernst Loosen, the Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese is a sublime expression of one of the Mosel's most storied grand cru vineyards. The name 'Lay' is an old Celtic term for slate, the very lifeblood of this site. Situated close to the Mosel River, the Bernkasteler Lay features a deep, heavy blue slate soil that yields a more textured, muscular, and richly mineral Riesling than its neighbors. This Auslese (select harvest) is made from fully ripe grapes, often touched by noble rot (botrytis), which are meticulously hand-harvested. Under Erni Loosen's stewardship, the estate honors centuries of winemaking heritage, utilizing traditional Fuder (large oak casks) and minimal intervention to let the pure, vibrant slate character shine through alongside luscious notes of honeyed peach, apricot, and electric acidity.
