Crafted by the legendary Ernst Loosen, the Bernkasteler Lay Riesling GG represents a masterful dry expression of one of the Mosel's most historic sites. The name 'Lay' stems from an old Celtic word for slate, a fitting tribute to the blue Devonian slate soils that define this steep vineyard situated along the Mosel River. Unlike some of its steeper neighbors, the Lay vineyard features a slightly gentler slope and deeper soil, yielding a Riesling of remarkable texture, weight, and rich mineral complexity. Following traditional Mosel practices, the wine is fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and aged on its fine lees in large, neutral oak Fuder casks. This minimal-intervention approach preserves the vibrant, stony energy of the terroir while imparting a round, harmonious structure that balances the grape's natural high acidity.

The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay. Dr. Loosen is globally celebrated for producing pure, expressive, and age-worthy Rieslings that range from vibrant dry bottlings to lusciously complex, mineral-laced Prädikat and dessert wines.
