✨ wine.spec_sheet

Crafted by the visionary winemaker Ernst Loosen, the Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) represents the pinnacle of Mosel dessert wines. The vineyard name 'Lay' translates to 'slate' in the old local dialect, a nod to the deep blue Devonian slate soils that define this steep, south-facing site along the Mosel River. This unique terroir imparts a distinct mineral texture and rich body to the Riesling grapes. To produce a TBA, individual berries shriveled by botrytis (noble rot) are painstakingly hand-harvested, often requiring multiple passes through the vineyard. The resulting nectar is incredibly concentrated, balancing luscious sweetness with the Mosel's signature electric acidity. Dr. Loosen's estate, which has been in the family for over 200 years, utilizes these traditional, labor-intensive methods to create a wine of monumental depth, historical reverence, and legendary complexity.

🍾 wine.about_producer

The historic Dr. Loosen estate, located in Bernkastel-Kues in the Mosel region of Germany, has been in the same family for over two centuries. Since taking ownership in 1988, Ernst Loosen has propelled the winery to international acclaim by focusing on the estate's extraordinary heritage of ungrafted, old Riesling vines—some over 120 years old—situated in historic grand cru sites such as Erdener Pr$lat, $rziger W$rzgarten, and Bernkasteler Lay. The winery's philosophy centers on minimalist winemaking and a deep respect for the region's diverse slate soils, which yield intensely mineral-driven, expressive wines. Dr. Loosen is globally renowned for its precise, elegant Rieslings, spanning from dry (Trocken) styles to exquisitely concentrated sweet expressions like Auslese, Beerenauslese, and rare Eisweins.
