The Erdener Prälat (Prelate of Erden) is legendary among Mosel vineyards, renowned as a tiny, south-facing amphitheater of weathered red slate. Spanning a mere four acres, this sun-drenched site is sheltered by towering cliffs that trap heat, creating a unique microclimate where Riesling grapes achieve extraordinary ripeness. Dr. Loosen’s Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese is crafted from extremely old, ungrafted vines, capturing the intense concentration and noble botrytis characteristic of this grand terroir. Historically, the vineyard was named after the prelates of the nearby abbey who claimed its prized wines for their own tables. The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay.
