✨ Technical Specifications
Hailing from the steep, slate-strewn slopes of the Mosel valley, the Losnicher Forsterlay Riesling Grosses Gewachs (GG) represents the pinnacle of dry German Riesling craftsmanship under the stewardship of Ernst Loosen. The village of Losnich, with a viticultural history dating back to Celtic times, features the Forsterlay (meaning 'forester's slate cliff') vineyard, where old vines dig deep into Devonian slate soils. Dr. Loosen crafts this dry masterpiece using traditional methods: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large, neutral oak Fuder casks, followed by extended maturation on the lees. This meticulous process preserves the intense, smoky minerality of the terroir, balancing vibrant, electric acidity with rich stone fruit flavors and a complex, structured finish that reflects centuries of Mosel winemaking heritage.
🍾 About the Producer
The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay. Dr. Loosen is globally celebrated for producing pure, expressive, and age-worthy Rieslings that range from vibrant dry bottlings to lusciously complex, mineral-laced Prädikat and dessert wines.
