✨ Technical Specifications
Dr. Loosen's Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Alte Reben GG Reserve represents the pinnacle of dry Mosel Riesling, combining ancient vines with traditional, patient winemaking. The Urziger Wurzgarten, or 'spice garden of Urzig,' is a legendary, precipitously steep vineyard famous for its striking red volcanic sandstone and slate soils, which stand in stark contrast to the blue slate found throughout most of the region. This unique geology imparts a distinctly exotic, spicy, and herbal character to the wine. Crafted from ungrafted 'Alte Reben' (old vines) that are over a century old, this Grosses Gewachs Reserve undergoes an artisanal aging process. It is fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured on its full lees for 24 months in traditional 1,000-liter oak Fuder casks, followed by extensive bottle aging before release. This extended maturation yields a dry white wine of incredible textural depth, vibrant acidity, and profound mineral complexity.
🍾 About the Producer
The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay. Dr. Loosen is globally celebrated for producing pure, expressive, and age-worthy Rieslings that range from vibrant dry bottlings to lusciously complex, mineral-laced Prädikat and dessert wines.
