Hailing from the legendary, precipitously steep amphitheater of the Urziger Wurzgarten, or 'spice garden of Urzig,' this rare Riesling Spatlese is a masterpiece of the Mosel. Unlike the blue slate soils typical of the region, the Wurzgarten is defined by a unique red volcanic soil rich in iron, which imparts a famously exotic, fiery, and spicy character to the grapes. This particular bottling is a 'Versteigerung' (Auction) wine, representing an ultra-limited, superior parcel selection destined for the prestigious annual VDP auction in Trier. Crafted by the iconic Ernst Loosen, who revitalized his family's centuries-old estate with a focus on old, ungrafted vines, this white wine showcases a brilliant tension between opulent tropical fruit sweetness, vibrant Mosel acidity, and a distinct, lingering herbal-spice complexity. The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay.
