✨ Technical Specifications
Hailing from one of the most iconic vineyards in the Mosel Valley, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Nr35 from Dr. Loosen is a masterclass in tension, sweetness, and mineral depth. The vineyard itself is legendary, named after the historic sundial erected in 1842 by Jodocus Pruem to guide the daily rhythm of the vineyard workers. Planted on dizzyingly steep, pure blue Devonian slate slopes, the ungrafted, ancient Riesling vines dig deep into the rock, yielding fruit of extraordinary concentration. The Nr35 designation refers to a historically prized cask selection, representing a parcel of exceptional quality. Hand-harvested with a significant portion of botrytized grapes, the wine is fermented slowly in traditional oak casks. It captures the classic Mosel archetype: a breathtaking dance of luscious peach and apricot sweetness balanced by a vibrant, electric spine of slate-driven acidity.
🍾 About the Producer
The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay. Dr. Loosen is globally celebrated for producing pure, expressive, and age-worthy Rieslings that range from vibrant dry bottlings to lusciously complex, mineral-laced Prädikat and dessert wines.
