Scharzhofberg is arguably the most famous vineyard in Germany's Saar valley, where the Egon Müller estate has crafted legendary Rieslings since 1797. The estate's history is deeply intertwined with the secularization of church properties during the French Revolution, when the Müller family acquired the historic estate from the monastery of St. Pauli. The Scharzhofberg vineyard itself is a steep, south-facing slope composed of weathered grey slate, featuring a cool microclimate that allows Riesling grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. The 'Auslese Goldkapsel' is a rare, highly prized bottling made only in exceptional vintages, representing a meticulous selection of botrytis-affected grapes harvested by hand. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional neutral oak casks, this 100% Riesling is a masterclass in tension, balancing luscious sweetness with a piercing, mineral-driven acidity and notes of white peach, honey, and wet stone.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Established in 1797 when the Müller family acquired the historic estate, Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof is located in Wiltingen within the Saar sub-region of the Mosel, Germany. Today, the estate is meticulously managed by Egon Müller IV, who continues a multi-generational legacy of producing some of the world's most coveted and long-lived white wines. The winery is legendary for its peerless Rieslings sourced from the steep, slate-rich slopes of the iconic Scharzhofberg vineyard, as well as the Wiltinger Braune Kupp site under the Le Gallais label. Emphasizing traditional, low-intervention cellar practices and old, ungrafted vines, Egon Müller crafts exceptionally precise, mineral-driven, and exquisitely balanced Rieslings ranging from crisp QbA to legendary, auction-grade Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese expressions.
