✨ wine.spec_sheet
Deep in the Saar valley, a tributary of the Mosel, lies the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, widely regarded as one of the greatest white wine terroirs on Earth. Cultivated since Roman times and once managed by the medieval monastery of St. Pauli, the estate was acquired by the Müller family in 1797 following the French Revolution. Here, Egon Müller crafts 100% Riesling masterpieces that defy time. The Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is born from late-harvested grapes, frequently touched by noble rot (botrytis), grown on steep, weathered grey slate slopes. Fermented in traditional neutral oak fuders, the wine achieves a sublime tension between luscious, honeyed sweetness and a crystalline, electric acidity. The specific 'Nr' designations, such as the highly coveted Nr. 20, represent exceptional auction-grade casks or Goldkapsel bottlings that showcase the absolute pinnacle of botrytised complexity and concentration.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Established in 1797 when the Müller family acquired the historic estate, Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof is located in Wiltingen within the Saar sub-region of the Mosel, Germany. Today, the estate is meticulously managed by Egon Müller IV, who continues a multi-generational legacy of producing some of the world's most coveted and long-lived white wines. The winery is legendary for its peerless Rieslings sourced from the steep, slate-rich slopes of the iconic Scharzhofberg vineyard, as well as the Wiltinger Braune Kupp site under the Le Gallais label. Emphasizing traditional, low-intervention cellar practices and old, ungrafted vines, Egon Müller crafts exceptionally precise, mineral-driven, and exquisitely balanced Rieslings ranging from crisp QbA to legendary, auction-grade Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese expressions.
