Egon Müller's Scharzhofberger Riesling Beerenauslese is one of the world's most legendary and collectible sweet wines, originating from the iconic Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar valley of the Mosel region. The history of this revered site stretches back to the Middle Ages when it was cultivated by Benedictine monks, eventually acquired by the Müller family in 1797 following the French Revolution. Grown on steep, south-facing slopes rich in weathered grey and red Devonian slate, the 100% Riesling grapes benefit from a cool microclimate that preserves razor-sharp acidity. To produce a Beerenauslese, individual botrytised grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in multiple passes. The resulting wine is a masterclass in tension, balancing luscious, honeyed sweetness with an electric, vibrating acidity that prevents it from ever feeling heavy.
