Hailing from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar valley, Egon Müller's Eiswein is the stuff of winemaking legend. The estate itself traces its history back to the medieval monastery of St. Pauli in Trier, but it is the Müller family's meticulous standards that have elevated it to global icon status. Eiswein is a high-stakes gamble with nature: 100% Riesling grapes are left on the vine into the freezing depths of winter, waiting for temperatures to drop below -7 degrees Celsius. Harvested by hand in the freezing dark of early morning, the grapes are pressed while still frozen, yielding a tiny quantity of highly concentrated, intensely sweet nectar balanced by a vibrant, electric acidity. The slate-rich soils of the Scharzhofberg impart a distinct mineral tension, making this one of the most complex, rare, and sought-after sweet wines in the world.
