Ried Burgstall is a historic vineyard perched on a sun-drenched, rocky plateau in Unterloiben, within Austria's majestic Wachau region. The name 'Burgstall' derives from a medieval fortification that once stood on this site guarding the Danube. Unlike the steeper, terraced slopes nearby, Burgstall sits on a high, flatter terrace characterized by primary rock (gneiss) topped with wind-blown loess and sand. This unique soil profile, combined with dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, coaxes an incredibly vibrant, mineral-driven expression from the Riesling vines. F.X. Pichler vinifies this fruit with minimal intervention, utilizing large, traditional oak casks to preserve its crystalline purity, electric acidity, and intense stone-fruit aromatics.
