Hailing from the sun-drenched terraces of the southern Rhône, the Gabriel Meffre 'Saint-Jean' is a classic expression of the Plan de Dieu Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation. The name 'Plan de Dieu' (Plain of God) dates back to the Middle Ages, when crossing this vast, bandit-ridden limestone plain was so perilous that travelers would commit their souls to God before embarking. Today, this terroir is celebrated for its deep beds of rolled pebbles (galets roulés) and red clay, which absorb the daytime heat and radiate it back to the vines at night. Swept by the fierce Mistral wind, the vineyard yields concentrated, deeply colored grapes. Gabriel Meffre crafts this cuvée to showcase the intense, ripe black fruit and wild garrigue herb aromas characteristic of this historic terroir, utilizing traditional fermentation and aging techniques that emphasize fruit purity and structural balance.
