The story of Gaja is the story of modern Italian winemaking. Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in the hills of Barbaresco, the estate rose to global prominence under the visionary leadership of Angelo Gaja in the late 20th century. Angelo revolutionized Piedmont by introducing green harvesting, temperature-controlled fermentations, and French barrique aging, forever changing how Nebbiolo was perceived. Gaja's signature Piedmontese reds are celebrated for their power, elegance, and intellectual complexity. Sourced from estate-owned vineyards characterized by calcareous clay soils, these wines undergo meticulous fermentation followed by aging in a combination of active barriques and traditional large oak casks. This dual-wood aging regimen tames Nebbiolo's formidable tannins while preserving its ethereal aromas of dried roses, tar, wild cherries, and exotic spices, embodying the perfect marriage of pioneering innovation and deep-seated Langhe tradition.

Gaja blev grundlagt i Barbaresco i 1859 af Giovanni Gaja og regnes i dag blandt de mest indflydelsesrige dynastier i moderne italiensk vinhistorie. Vingårdens verdensberømmelse skyldes i høj grad fjerde generations ikoniske frontfigur, Angelo Gaja, som revolutionerede Piemonte ved at indføre temperaturstyret gæring, modning på franske barriques, grøn høst samt enkeltmarksaftapninger. Markarbejdet på Langhes klassiske kalkholdige mergeljord tager udgangspunkt i biodiversitet, sund jordbundsvitalitet og økologiske principper tilpasset klimaforandringerne, frem for rigide certificeringsordninger. Huset hyldes verden over for sine skoledannende Nebbiolo-vine – ikke mindst flagskibet Barbaresco DOCG samt de legendariske enkeltmarkscruer Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn og Costa Russi foruden Barolo-cruen Sperss. Ud over disse uovertrufne fortolkninger af Nebbiolo har familien også fornyet Piemontes hvidvine og klassiske Bordeaux-blends med banebrydende cuvéer som Gaia & Rey Chardonnay, Rossj-Bass og Darmagi. I dag drives vingården i tæt parløb mellem Angelo og hans tre børn Gaia, Rossana og Giovanni.
