Gaja's Darmagi is a legendary and provocative bottling born from a family dispute and a vision to challenge Italian winemaking traditions. In 1978, Angelo Gaja boldly uprooted historic Nebbiolo vines in a prime Barbaresco vineyard to plant Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon seeing the newly planted international variety, Angelo's traditionalist father, Giovanni Gaja, reportedly muttered 'Darmagi'—meaning 'what a pity' or 'what a shame' in local Piedmontese dialect. Today, this wine stands as a triumphant testament to Gaja's pioneering spirit. Primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Darmagi is grown on clay-limestone soils and aged in French oak barriques followed by traditional large oak casks.
