Gaja's 'Vecchia Riserva' represents a legendary chapter in the history of Piedmontese winemaking, hailing from an era before the strict codification of DOC and DOCG laws. Crafted in the mid-20th century under the guidance of Giovanni Gaja, Angelo Gaja's father, this historic bottling was a selection of the finest Nebbiolo grapes from the estate's prized parcels in Barbaresco. Unlike the modern, single-vineyard expressions that would later define the estate, the Vecchia Riserva was a masterclass in traditional blending and patient cellar work. It was aged for extended periods in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, allowing the fierce tannins of the Nebbiolo grape to soften into a complex tapestry of dried roses, tar, leather, and autumnal forest floor. This wine stands as a monument to the Gaja family's foundational role in elevating Barbaresco from a rustic local red to a world-class collectible.
πΎ About the Producer
Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in the village of Barbaresco, Piedmont, Gaja has evolved into one of the world's most celebrated and visionary wine estates. The house was catapulted to international acclaim under the transformative stewardship of Angelo Gaja, who revolutionized Italian viticulture by pioneering green harvesting, temperature-controlled fermentations, French barrique aging, and single-vineyard bottlings. Today, alongside legendary Nebbiolo expressions such as Barbaresco, Sorì San Lorenzo, and Sperss, the family crafts benchmark whites like Gaia & Rey, fine grappas, and acclaimed wines from their Tuscan estates in Bolgheri and Montalcino. Uncompromising in quality and innovation while deeply rooted in their heritage, the Gaja family produces intensely expressive, structured, and age-worthy masterpieces that define modern Italian fine wine.
