The Glenlivet Cipher is a legendary modern enigma in the world of single malt Scotch. Released in 2016 by Master Distiller Alan Winchester, this expression was presented in an opaque, matte-black bottle with absolutely no cask details, age statement, or tasting notes, challenging whisky enthusiasts to decode its flavor profile themselves. This playful secrecy harks back to the early, illicit days of Speyside distilling, when George Smith and his contemporaries had to smuggle their spirits through the rugged hills of the Livet valley. Crafted using a unique combination of casks never before used by the distillery—including first-fill American oak and sherry-seasoned casks—Cipher offers a complex, multi-layered journey of discovery that celebrates the art of sensory perception.

Established in 1824 by George Smith in the remote Glenlivet valley of Speyside, Scotland, The Glenlivet is legendary as the first licensed distillery in the parish, setting the standard for Speyside single malts. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, the distillery draws its mineral-rich water from Josie's Well and utilizes lantern-shaped copper pot stills to produce a characteristically bright, elegant, and fruity spirit. The Glenlivet is globally renowned for its exceptional wood management, utilizing traditional oak, American white oak, and French Limousin oak casks to age signature expressions such as the 12 Year Old, the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve, and the rare Winchester Collection.
