The Röttgen vineyard, rising precipitously above the river in the village of Winningen, is one of the Mosel's most dramatic and historically significant grand crus. Its name derives from the medieval German word 'roden' (to clear land), referencing the arduous task faced by early Christian monks who carved terraces directly into the sheer cliffs of soft, iron-rich yellow and blue Devonian slate. Heymann-Löwenstein's Röttgen Grosse Lage is a masterclass in extreme viticulture. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in traditional large oak casks and left on its lees for an extended period, this dry Riesling is celebrated for its baroque, opulent character. It beautifully balances intense, smoky minerality with exotic fruit notes, showcasing the unique microclimate of these sun-drenched, amphitheater-like terraces.
