Perched on the dizzyingly steep, terraced cliffs of the Terrassenmosel, the Winninger Röttgen vineyard is a dramatic amphitheater of stone and vine. The name 'Röttgen' historically refers to the clearing of the land ('roden') and the striking, iron-rich reddish slate that defines this grand cru site. In exceptional vintages, when autumn mists from the Mosel River encourage the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), Heymann-Löwenstein crafts this rare Beerenauslese. Every single shriveled, honeyed berry is painstakingly selected by hand during multiple passes through the vineyard. Fermented slowly with indigenous yeasts, the resulting wine is a monumental expression of concentrated minerality, vibrant acidity, and luscious sweetness, capturing the wild, untamed spirit of one of Germany's most challenging viticultural landscapes.

Established in 1980 by Reinhard Löwenstein and Cornelia Heymann-Löwenstein in the historic village of Winningen, the Heymann-Löwenstein estate is a pioneering force in Germany's Terrassenmosel region. Renowned for championing terroir-driven, bone-dry Rieslings from breathtakingly steep, slate-terraced vineyards, the winery focuses on capturing the distinct mineral signatures of legendary sites like Röttgen and Uhlen. Their low-intervention winemaking philosophy relies on spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended lees contact, and traditional large oak casks, resulting in highly complex, structured, and age-worthy wines. Today, under the guidance of daughter Sarah Löwenstein, the estate continues to produce some of the Mosel's most profound, expressive Rieslings, ranging from powerful Grosses Gewächs to exquisite, botrytis-affected noble sweet styles.
