The name 'Uhlen' is historically linked to the owls ('Eulen') that nest in the warm, rocky crevices of these towering stone walls. Within this grand cru site lies the prized 'Roth Lay' (red slate) parcel, characterized by an iron-rich, reddish Devonian slate soil that imparts an unmistakable smoky, spicy, and deeply mineral complexity to the wine. Fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts in traditional large oak Fuder casks and left on its lees for an extended period, this Grosses Gewächs is a powerful, dry masterpiece that beautifully captures the wild, untamed spirit of the Mosel's extreme slopes.
