Highland Park, established in 1798 on the windswept Orkney Islands, is one of Scotland's most remote and historic distilleries. Founded by Magnus Eunson—a direct descendant of Viking settlers who famously worked as a church beadle by day and an illicit distiller by night—the distillery deeply embraces its Norse heritage. The Orkney Single Malt 16-Year-Old showcases the unique terroir of these northern islands. Unlike mainland distilleries, Highland Park uses peat harvested from the nearby Hobbister Moor. This peat is packed with decomposed heather, imparting a distinctive floral, sweet, and aromatic smoke rather than the medicinal, tarry notes found in Islay whiskies. This expression is crafted using traditional floor maltings and is matured predominantly in hand-selected sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, resulting in a complex spirit that marries heather honey sweetness, rich dried fruits, and gentle peat smoke.
