Hailing from the high-altitude, cliff-shadowed vineyards of Saint-Romain in the Cote de Beaune, the Cuvee Joseph Menault is a beautifully expressive white Burgundy. This cuvee is named in honor of Joseph Menault, a generous benefactor who bequeathed his prized vineyard parcels to the Hospices de Beaune. The terroir of Saint-Romain is defined by its elevated position and active limestone soils, which impart a signature tense minerality, vibrant acidity, and bright citrus character to the Chardonnay grapes. Following the historic annual auction, the wine is traditionally raised in French oak barrels by selected negociants-eleveurs, marrying the natural freshness and flinty energy of the high slopes with a subtle, textured complexity.
🍾 About the Producer
Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hospices de Beaune was established as a charitable hospital supported by donations of prime vineyard parcels. Today, the historic estate encompasses over 60 hectares of exceptionally situated Premier and Grand Cru vineyards across Burgundy's Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Revered worldwide for its historic charity wine auction held every November since 1859, the domaine employs meticulous, organic viticultural techniques to highlight the uncompromised terroir of each plot. Its celebrated portfolio consists of distinguished Pinot Noir and Chardonnay cuvées, each named in honor of prominent historical benefactors such as Cuvée Nicolas Rolin and Cuvée Charlotte Dumay.
