Hugel's Gentil is a masterful revival of an ancient Alsatian tradition dating back centuries, when blends of noble grape varieties were referred to as 'Gentil'. Famille Hugel championed the resurrection of this historic category to create a welcoming, high-quality introduction to the region's diverse terroir. Unlike simple field blends, each grape variety in Gentil is harvested and vinified separately to achieve its peak expression before the final assembly. The resulting wine is a harmonious kaleidoscope of Alsace: Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner provide a crisp, refreshing backbone; Riesling adds mineral elegance; Pinot Gris contributes body and structure; Gewurztraminer lends exotic spice; and Muscat injects a delicate floral lift. Grown on the clay-limestone soils around the medieval town of Riquewihr, it represents a seamless marriage of historic blending philosophy and modern precision.
πΎ About the Producer
Established in 1639 in the picturesque medieval village of Riquewihr, Famille Hugel is one of the most venerable and celebrated wine producers in Alsace, France. Managed continuously by more than a dozen generations of the Hugel family, the estate combines historic family vineyards with carefully sourced fruit to champion the diverse terroirs of the region. Hugel was instrumental in establishing the official regulations for Alsace's revered late-harvest categories, Vendanges Tardives and SΓ©lection de Grains Nobles. Renowned globally for their purity, elegance, and ageability, the winery crafts benchmark dry and sweet expressions of noble Alsace varieties, particularly Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris, vinified traditionally in century-old oak foudres.
