Jacques Selosse's 'Version Originale' (V.O.) is a masterclass in the expression of chalky Grand Cru terroir. Sourced from steep hillside vineyards in the legendary Côte des Blancs villages of Avize, Oger, and Cramant, this cuvée represents a deeper, more intense sibling to the estate's 'Initial.' Anselme Selosse's revolutionary approach shines here: a blend of three consecutive vintages aged in oak casks, followed by an extended period of five to six years on the lees. Unlike many Champagnes that rely on a heavy dosage to mask imperfections, V.O. is disgorged with little to no sugar (Extra Brut), allowing the raw, mineral-drenched power of the limestone soils to take center stage. The wine is celebrated for its oxidative complexity, boasting notes of dried fruits, ginger, and toasted brioche, balanced by a fierce, saline acidity that reflects the pure soul of the Grand Cru terroir.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Founded in 1949 in the Grand Cru village of Avize, Champagne Jacques Selosse rose to legendary status under the visionary leadership of Anselme Selosse, who took over the estate in 1974. Applying Burgundian winemaking philosophies to the Côte des Blancs, Anselme pioneered low yields, organic viticulture, and fermentation in oak casks, fundamentally transforming modern Champagne production. The estate is celebrated for its highly individualistic, terroir-driven cuvées, including the solera-aged Substance and the acclaimed Lieux-dits series, which showcase an unparalleled depth, oxidative complexity, and vinous character.
