✨ wine.spec_sheet
In the frosty depths of winter, when the Rheingau landscape is hushed under a blanket of snow, the vineyards of Hochheim witness a high-stakes viticultural gamble. Weingut Künstler’s Hochheimer Reichestal Riesling Eiswein is born from this daring tradition. The Reichestal, or 'rich valley,' is a site characterized by deep, nutrient-rich loess and clay soils, where cold air pools perfectly during freezing winter nights. To capture this rare nectar, pickers must brave temperatures of at least minus seven degrees Celsius, harvesting the rock-hard, frozen Riesling grapes in the dark, early hours of the morning. Pressed immediately while still frozen, only the highly concentrated, sugary juice is extracted, leaving the water behind as ice. The resulting wine is a breathtaking balance of electric, vibrant acidity and luscious, honeyed sweetness—a true testament to the extreme patience and craftsmanship of the Künstler estate.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Re-established in 1965 by Franz Künstler in Hochheim am Main, Weingut Künstler carries forward a family winemaking heritage dating back to 1648 in Moravia. Today, under the stewardship of Gunter Künstler, who took over in 1992, the estate has risen to become one of the Rheingau's most celebrated producers and a prominent member of the VDP. The winery is renowned for its meticulous management of legendary Erste and Grosse Lage vineyards, such as Hochheimer Hölle and Kirchenstück. Utilizing traditional large oak casks alongside modern stainless steel, Künstler crafts exceptionally precise, mineral-driven Rieslings and elegant Spätburgunders that beautifully express the unique clay-loess and limestone terroirs near the Main river.
