✨ wine.spec_sheet

Hailing from one of the Rheingau's most dramatic landscapes, the Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland is a legendary steep-slope vineyard situated at the bend of the Rhine River. The name 'Rottland' derives from the old German word 'roden' or 'reuten', referring to the clearing of forest land for viticulture that dates back to the 11th century. Here, the vines cling to steep, south-facing terraces composed of weathered slate, quartzite, and gravel. This unique terroir, combined with the intense sunlight reflected off the river, coaxes an extraordinary level of ripeness and mineral complexity from the Riesling grape. Weingut Künstler masterfully captures this terroir in their Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottling, employing traditional fermentation and aging in large neutral oak casks. The resulting wine is a powerful, dry masterpiece, balancing rich stone fruit and citrus zest with a profound, smoky, flint-like minerality and a vibrant, long-lived structure.

🍾 wine.about_producer

Re-established in 1965 by Franz Künstler in Hochheim am Main, Weingut Künstler carries forward a family winemaking heritage dating back to 1648 in Moravia. Today, under the stewardship of Gunter Künstler, who took over in 1992, the estate has risen to become one of the Rheingau's most celebrated producers and a prominent member of the VDP. The winery is renowned for its meticulous management of legendary Erste and Grosse Lage vineyards, such as Hochheimer Hölle and Kirchenstück. Utilizing traditional large oak casks alongside modern stainless steel, Künstler crafts exceptionally precise, mineral-driven Rieslings and elegant Spätburgunders that beautifully express the unique clay-loess and limestone terroirs near the Main river.
