Founded in 1890 by five Basque and Riojan families in Haro's legendary Barrio de la Estación, La Rioja Alta, S.A. stands as a global benchmark for traditional Rioja. Their Gran Reserva wines are the ultimate expression of this heritage, produced only in exceptional vintages. This wine is typically crafted from a meticulous selection of old-vine Tempranillo, balanced with a touch of Graciano for acidity and structural longevity. The fruit is sourced from prime clay-limestone vineyards in Briñas, Labastida, and Villalba, benefiting from a cool Atlantic-influenced climate. True to centuries-old customs, the wine undergoes prolonged aging in American oak barrels handcrafted by the winery's own coopers. A signature artisanal practice is 'trasiega' (racking) performed entirely by hand and candlelight every six months to naturally clarify the wine and encourage gentle oxidation. The resulting style is incredibly silky, complex, and aromatic, showcasing notes of dried cherries, leather, tobacco, and sweet balsamic spices.
