Laphroaig 10 Year Old is the definitive Islay single malt, renowned globally for its bold, medicinal, and deeply smoky character. Established in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the rugged south coast of Islay, the distillery's name translates from Gaelic to 'the beautiful hollow by the broad bay.' This iconic expression is crafted using barley dried over damp peat from the distillery's own hand-cut peat beds at Glenmachrie, infusing the spirit with its signature tarry, iodine, and seaweed notes. Distilled in unique copper pot stills with flat-bottomed shapes, it is matured for a full decade in seasoned ex-bourbon barrels, which tempers the intense peat smoke with sweet vanilla, coconut, and spices. Folklore tells that during US Prohibition, Laphroaig was legally imported into the United States as a 'medicinal spirit' because its intense, iodine-rich aroma convinced customs officials it could only be used for health purposes.
